Code of Conduct

Use common sense, and be courteous of others.

This code of conduct is kept for historical purpose – for the current version please check out current code of conduct.

Attendee Code of Conduct and You

Common sense is the basis of the Attendee Code of Conduct (ACoC). The ACoC serves as a guideline to frame acceptable and unacceptable behavior while attending Furry Migration (FM) before, during and after the convention. Not all rules and situations are covered by the code of conduct and following common sense will cover those not outlined. As an attendee of Furry Migration you are expected to follow all hotel policies, local, state and federal laws and regulations. This includes excessive noise from guest rooms.

FM Events and function spaces are open to registered members of the convention and hotel staff. A membership requires the purchase of a badge from the convention. A badge permits entry into the convention function space and it’s activities. Anyone without a badge attempting to enter convention space will be requested to purchase a membership or to leave the convention.

We understand that many attendees have various allergies. Furry Migration, when informed about a particular situation, will attempt to make a reasonable accommodation to address allergy situations on a case by case basis.

General Rating

Furry Migration has a general rating of PG. Harsh language, inappropriate behavior, inappropriate dress and harassment are not tolerated anywhere on convention grounds. Some events and panels are adult themed. Those panels and events require proof of age from a government issued ID, or parental participation to attend the event.

Anyone under the age of 18 years when the convention starts is considered a minor. Any attendee of FM under the age of 16 when the convention starts must be accompanied by a paid attending parent or legal guardian. A signed and notarized parental permission form must be presented when purchasing a membership.

Minors are not permitted under any circumstances to enter areas that have been designated for mature audiences. Anyone providing false documentation of identity or age will be denied membership and reported to local authorities.

Convention Badges

Convention badges are the property of FM for the duration of the convention, and must be presented to any FM staff member and volunteers upon request. Convention badges must be displayed at all times in convention common spaces and function spaces. This also includes fursuiters and cosplayers. Distribution and production of counterfeit badges are expressly forbidden.

Convention Operations

FM’s Operations Department and Senior Staff Members are here to serve and assist the attendees of FM by promoting the fulfilment of the convention’s Code of Conduct, and to answer any questions you may have about the convention. They will be identifiable by a vest or a staff badge. As such, we please ask all attendees to follow their instructions within reason. This includes relinquishing of your membership badge.

If you have a complaint about any action taken by a staff member or the Operations Department, you may take the matter up with the Department Head on duty for Operations, the Division Heads, or finally the Convention Chairman.

Alcohol & Illegal Substances

Furry Migration believes in the responsible adult consumption of alcoholic beverages. The convention does not directly serve alcohol to the membership. This does not include room parties, hotel services, or guest rooms. Furry Migration does not condone the use of illegal substances.

Costume and Replica Weapons

Due to safety and legal concerns firearms, working projectile weapons, replica firearms or deactivated weapons are not allowed at FM. FM reserves the right to define ‘replica’ in these cases.

No realistic-looking state/federal law enforcement or military uniforms outside of military dress uniform.

Edged weapons must be sheathed and peace bound within convention space. See a senior staff member or the Operations Department for more details. Temporary exceptions may be made for newly purchased weapons carried DIRECTLY outside convention space. If your prop is of the ‘large and unwieldy’ variety please be mindful of people and property around you.

Brandishing or unsheathing any weapon for any reason is not allowed, and will result in the confiscation of the weapon for the duration of the convention. Repeated offences will result in the revocation of your membership for the duration of the event.

The safety of our members and hotel guests is our No.1 concern.

Hate Speech, Symbology, and Harassment

Furry Migration has a zero tolerance for anyone displaying suppression through speech, actions, or symbols GENERALLY UNDERSTOOD to be offensive and are not acceptable at any time. Furry Migration is a place of inclusion and diversity. Persons displaying any actions, iconography, speech of suppression, and/or harassment of any type will be asked to refrain from these activities or remove these symbols. Failure to do so will result in the revocation of their badge and membership.

Harassment includes, but is not limited to:

  • Physical assault and/or battery
  • Offensive verbal comments
  • Inappropriate physical contact
  • Unwelcome physical attention
  • Intimidation
  • Stalking

Dealing with Harassment

If you feel that you are being harassed or subjected to prejudiced or unwelcome behavior, if you are aware of others being harassed or subjected to prejudiced or unwelcome behavior, or if you notice someone behaving inappropriately (such as violating hotel or convention policies), please come to Operations, a Safe Place location, or a staff member. You will receive assistance, to the best of our abilities.

If someone tells you “no” or asks to be left alone, your interaction with them is over. Do not follow or attempt to disrupt their convention experience in any way. If you continue, against their wishes, to attempt to have contact with people who have said no or have asked that you leave them alone, you may be removed from the premises. If you wish to offer an apology to someone who asked that you not interact with them, please come to Furry Migration Operations who can assist in relaying your message.

Poster and Signage Policy

All posters and signage must be applied with blue painter’s tape only! Attendees of the convention are allowed to affix posters and signs to non-stainless steel surfaces on their guest room door, the party floor, and in the convention space. Any signage not using blue painter’s tape will be removed. Signs and posters must be rated ‘PG’ or will be removed.

FM provides a message board in a public area where members may post messages or place announcements.

Photography, Video Filming & Press

By purchasing a Furry Migration membership, you consent to officially badged Furry Migration Staff to photograph or video film you for official convention use. Photography and video filming by convention members for personal use with the permission of the subjects is allowed in all common areas of FM. If an individual does not wish to be photographed or filmed, please respect their wishes.

Please note that there is no photography or filming in some event spaces. This includes but is not limited to art show, fursuit lounge(s) and charity auction.

Photography, filming, or taping for the purpose of sale, publication, public media, or dissemination is expressly prohibited without written authorization from FM. All pictures, film, and tape shall be for personal use only.

All journalists, media photographers, and any other members of the press are required to display an official Furry Migration Press Badge. They are also required to be accompanied by a member of FM’s staff while on the convention hotel’s property.

The name “Furry Migration” is a registered service mark of Minnesota Furs Inc., and must not be used in any fashion that infringes on that mark. Members agree to remove from circulation or publication any image, statement or recording that is in the legal opinion of Minnesota Furs, Inc. misrepresents or defames its service mark.

ADA Service Animals & Pets

Furry Migration observes and follows the most current ADA guidelines for service animals. Service Animals will be issued a badge to prevent further questions by the membership. This badge will be issued after approval of the Operations Department.

See this link for more information about the ADA’s qualifications of Service Animals:

While the Hyatt allows animals in private sleeping rooms, convention space is considered private function space rented by Furry Migration where only service animals are allowed.

Sales of Merchandise

Sales of any products or goods is prohibited outside of designated areas.

Violations of ACoC

Violations of the Code of Conduct above come with penalties. These penalties include but are not limited to verbal warning, written warning, confiscation of your badge, revocation of membership, temporary ban, or permanent ban. These penalties are in place to prevent unsafe behavior and situations from impacting the convention, our personnel, our resources, or our relationship with the hotel. Penalties may be increased depending on the severity of the offence.

If a member is removed by the hotel management from its premises for any reason, FM will revoke current membership and deny future membership for the duration of the hotel ban.

FM reserves the right to change, amend, or modify these rules at any time without prior notice. Any changes to the Code of Conduct will be visibly posted at registration at the convention, will be included with the convention book, and will be noted on the Furry Migration website if changes occur outside two weeks of the start of the convention.
